Yahtzee scoring

  • Ones to Sixes: add up only the dice showing that number.
  • Upper bonus: 35 points if the six upper boxes total 63 or more (three of each number gets you exactly 63).
  • Three of a kind / Four of a kind: the total of all five dice.
  • Full house (three of one number and two of another): 25.
  • Small straight (four in a row): 30. Large straight (five in a row): 40.
  • Yahtzee (five of a kind): 50. Each extra Yahtzee earns a 100-point bonus if your Yahtzee box already has 50.
  • Chance: the total of all five dice, for any roll.

Joker rule: after the Yahtzee box is filled, another Yahtzee must go in its matching upper box if that is free; otherwise it can fill a lower box for full points (a full house still scores 25). The scorecard follows this for you.

Yahtzee odds

On a single roll of five dice, a Yahtzee comes up 6 times in 7,776, or 1 in 1,296 (0.08%). Over a full turn of three rolls, keeping your most common number each time, it is about 4.5%, roughly once every 22 turns. The dice roller page has the odds for every hand.

Questions

How many rolls do you get in Yahtzee?

Up to three per turn. After the first roll you can hold any dice and roll the rest again, twice.

What is a small straight?

Four numbers in a row, such as 1-2-3-4, 2-3-4-5 or 3-4-5-6. It scores 30 points. A large straight is five in a row and scores 40.

How does the Yahtzee bonus work?

If you have already scored 50 in the Yahtzee box, every extra Yahtzee earns 100 bonus points, and you also fill a box using the joker rule.

How do you get the upper section bonus?

Score 63 or more in Ones to Sixes and you get 35 extra points. The card shows how many points you still need.
